Despite the love, care, and attention that the normal domestic cat receives, it is often the typical ‘moggie’ or mixed breed of cat which lives longer.

Domestic pet cats are commonly the result of artificial breeding, and their genetic make up frequently makes them more prone to disease which shortens their life span.

For any domestic cat which is well cared for, not allowed to wander around, and is fed a healthy diet, can expect to have an average life of 15 years.

A cat which is restricted to spending life indoors will live longer than a free ranging cat. It will not be exposed to threats from other animals. Cats who are allowed to roam around are in danger from traffic, cat disease, and being poisoned is not uncommon from the pesticides freely sprayed in outdoor vegetation.

The average life of a cat can be extended by controlling the amount of food given. Over feeding the cat will lead to the pet animal becoming overweight. This can lead to health problems such as breathing difficulties, cat diabetes, and asthma.

Most cats will exercise themselves, but to ensure sufficient exercise is given, regularly spend time playing games with the cat. This will help control weight and contribute to the overall health of the cat. This is especially true for cats which are getting past middle age.

To further increase the life span of the animal it is recommended that the cat is neutered. Even if the cat is confined to the house and garden, very often other cats will intrude, and any male cat which is not spayed will tend to become aggressive in defending its own territory. This can lead to injury.

Regular visits should be made to the vet, and the general well being and health of the cat checked. This habit too will ensure that the pet will live a natural long life.
